It’s been 3 years since the last Pirates film, and fans are dying to know more about Pirates of the Caribbean 6.

So, when will it be released? Will Johnny Depp return as the famous seafaring scoundrel, Captain Jack Sparrow?

Here’s what I found so far…

When Will Pirates of the Caribbean 6 Come Out?

The 6th film was expected to come out this year in 2020, but it was postponed for release next year, 2021.

This means that the Pirates of the Caribbean 6 release date will likely be 2021 now.

According to Terry Rossio and Jeff Nathanson, they are still working on the script for the latest installment in this swashbuckling franchise.

The producer of the franchise, Jerry Bruckheimer, confirmed this too. (More on this later.)

It’s perhaps likely that the global lockdown situation has postponed any work that might have been planned at this point.

Rumors About a Female Lead

On a different note, reports and rumors have been circulating about a female lead.

There have been talks of casting Karen Gillan, who played Nebula in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. (Guardians of the Galaxy is another of my faves. Read more about that upcoming sequel.)

As of the moment, it is unknown whether the actress has been officially offered the role.

One thing is quite sure, though: The Mouse House is interested in her yet again.

Here’s another juicy bit of gossip: Disney is also considering women of color to lead the 6th installment.

If they do pursue a female lead for this film, then Pirates of the Caribbean 6 could be focused on Redd.

Redd is a famous female pirate who was introduced and featured in the Disney Parks POTC attraction.

Of course, this female lead tidbit is still a speculation.

Remember that Davy Jones is also anticipated to be the protagonist.

There’s a lot we don’t know at this point, but it’s fun to try and figure it all out!

The Rest of the Cast

Furthermore, fans expect Orlando Bloom to reprise his role as William Turner since the curses have been broken.

Keira Knightley, who plays Elizabeth Turner, is also expected to return, bringing the classic couple to the screen once more.

It is also clear that Brenton Thwaites and Kaya Scodelario will reprise their characters as Henry Turner and Carina Barbossa.

What Is the Plot of Pirates of the Caribbean 6?

The after-credits scene of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales revealed that William had a dream.

The fantasy, which involved Davy Jones, appeared to be so real.

On one hand, it could’ve hinted that Pirates of the Caribbean 6 will revolve around the Turner couple and Davy Jones.

On the other hand, it may mean that Captain Jack Sparrow will be involved.

Speaking of…

Will Johnny Depp Reprise His Role as Captain Jack Sparrow?

Depp has been wrapped up in controversy because of the situation with his ex-wife Amber Heard.

Jerry Bruckheimer mentioned in an interview that they are working on a draft right now.

“Hopefully, we’ll get it shortly and give it to Disney, and hopefully they’ll like it. We don’t know; we’ve been working on it for a little bit.

When asked if it will be a spin-off or be another movie for Johnny Depp, he answered, “Well, the one we’re developing right now, we’re not sure quite what Johnny’s role is going to be, so we’ll have to see.”

Does that mean Depp is totally out? I hope not!

In the hopes that Depp will return as Jack Sparrow, fans have been retweeting the hashtag #NoJohnnyNoPirates for a while now.

This kind of response from fans is expected since Depp as Sparrow has become the face of the entire film saga.

In my opinion, nobody else could do the role justice at this point. In other words..

The Bottom Line

All reports are still speculations, and we have yet to hear Disney’s official announcement.

So far, Johnny Depp is anticipated to reprise his role, even if just for a cameo. But who knows?

Let’s face it. Pirates of the Caribbean without Jack Sparrow is like Hamilton without Alexander Hamilton. AKA: not the same story.

Personally, I hope the Disney listens to the fans’ appeal for Johnny’s return.

Only time will tell, I suppose. For now, fingers crossed!
