Fans have been retweeting #MakeSolo2Happen again, and the question remains: Will there ever be a Solo 2 sequel?

A Request from Star Wars Fans

The hashtag #MakeSolo2Happen trend began in May of 2019, before the first anniversary of the movie’s release.

It was used widely again since May of this year, with fans hoping that Disney would listen to their plea.

By using the hashtag, fans intend to celebrate Solo and show that the film has a vocal fanbase, despite the disappointing response it received upon release.

Is the Solo 2 Sequel Even In the Works?

The campaign reached Solo‘s director, Ron Howard, in 2019, and his reply was short but sweet.

It also gained the attention of Jonathan Kasdan, who co-wrote Solo with his father, Lawrence.

Unfortunately, in March 2020, Kasdan mentioned that Solo 2 is not in development, either as a Disney Plus TV series or a movie.

Based on his response, Disney might not make Solo 2 happen.

At least not yet…

Why Disney Might Not Consider It a Priority

For now, it seems that a Solo 2 sequel film is not on Disney’s priority list.

We can think of two potential reasons why.

First, Solo was the first-ever Star Wars movie to fail at the box office.

It only grossed $393.2 million, which is close to its budget of $250 million.

Needless to say, but we’ll say it anyway, the film was a bit of a box office flop.

Solo did manage to receive decent responses from critics, but many Star Wars fans were left unimpressed by it.

Personally, I absolutely loved it. It was basically Indiana Jones in outer space, and it made me super happy as a fan of both classic adventure films like Indy, and of Star Wars more specifically. Getting to see an iconic character’s story in this detail (along with a Chewbacca origin!) was just awesome to me.

However, all that said, it is also important to know why the budget for the first film ballooned.

The reason behind it was the need for Ron Howard to replace Chris Miller and Phil Lord as director, and that transition demanded a lot of reshoots.

So, it actually makes some financial sense if Disney doesn’t prioritize the sequel or doesn’t consider it at all.

Second, Disney may not be prioritizing Solo 2 yet because it is focusing on Disney Plus TV shows.

The streaming service has been busy releasing new content ever since the global situation affected the entertainment industry.

Speaking of which, check out the list of movies and shows coming to Disney Plus this June.

Why a Solo 2 Sequel Could Still Happen

Sure, the Solo 2 sequel may not be in development yet, but it could still happen.

It’s possible for Disney to show more adventures of Han, Chewie, Lando, and Qi’ra.

That whole crew is loved by fans, after all. And I also loved Rio Durant. I got the Funko Pop of him as soon as I could.

We are just uncertain whether their adventures would be in the form of a film or a television show series.

More significantly, Solo had an open-ended narrative, leaving room for a potential sequel.

In short, Solo 2 can still happen but not probably not soon. Sadly, that’s just the galactic truth at the moment.

Even so, in the meantime, fans of the galaxy far, far away could watch Mandalorian on Disney Plus while waiting for an update on Solo 2. If there’s any news on a sequel, you’ll find it right here on D Is For Disney!
