What are the Marvel Dark Ages, and what does it mean for the future of Marvel comics? On July 15, 2020, the first day of Free Comic Book Summer, Marvel released a new issue, X-Men #1. See the teaser image and the whole story below about what they’re calling “A Saga of the Marvel Universe”.
Warning: Spoilers for 'X-Men #1' FCBD 2020 storyline ahead.
Free Comic Book Day 2020 | X-Men #1
On July 15, 2020, the kickoff for Free Comic Book Day (or Free Comic Book Summer, really) begins!
There’s some really exciting releases on offer, but one of the biggest free comics is X-Men #1.
A brand new comic released just for FCBD, this issue already has a lot of excitement going on, and that’s just the cover!
Once you open it up and get into the issue itself, you’re quickly drawn into a dramatic story involving some of our most favorite superheroes.
Reader Beware: Final spoiler warning!
This FCBD comic is a “backup story” that focuses on the Avengers (and Iron Man in particular).
The plot occurs on a night when a massive earthquake shuts down the city’s power grid, or so it seems.
In the midst of it all, Iron Man’s suit loses its power, and he falls, where Pepper Potts comes to his aid.
The final line is from Iron Man. He says to Pepper, “It’s all gone…dark…forever.”

Marvel Dark Ages | The Hidden Announcement
At the end of this particular X-Men comic book, there’s a teaser image that gives us, the readers and fans, a glimpse of what might be to come…
Here’s what ComicBook.com writes about their thoughts and impressions, regarding this newest teaser image from Marvel Comics about the latest series saga:
Marvel’s first Free Comic Book Day issue of X-Men teased quite a bit of what’s to come in the X-Men universe moving forward, but it also held a huge surprise after the credits rolled. For those who kept reading, it also featured a full reveal of a brand new series. … The series revealed a full logo with the tagline “Where were you when the lights went out? A saga of the Marvel Universe”.

In other words, there’s a lot to come, and we honestly don’t know at all what to expect from this new comic book series.
We do know, though, that it seems to be a departure from the official storyline. AKA, it won’t be “canon” in the same way of something like Marvel’s Earth-616.
All of that being said…
I’m super excited to read more and see where this all goes. The full saga is expected to get under way and be released in Fall 2020.
The new Marvel Dark Ages series has the following artists and writers working on it currently:
- Tom Taylor (Writer)
- Iban Coello (Artist)
- Brian Reber (Color Artist)
- Joe Sabino (Letterer)
- Jay Bowen (Logo Design)
What do you think about all this?
