The Official Disney Princesses

Disney has made a ton of movies over the years. A lot of them feature princesses and princes.

So, you might wonder, “Who are the official Disney princesses?”

Another big question: “What makes a character a Disney Princess?”

Well, I’m here to answer all of these questions for you!

AND to give you a few unofficial Disney Princesses too! 😉

What Makes a Character an Official Disney Princess?

This one is a difficult question to answer.

Especially because some characters like Anna and Elsa aren’t technically an official Disney Princess, according Disney itself.

But, there are some ways we can try to answer the question. According to popular fan website Fandom, there are a few criteria:

The franchise currently comprises twelve female protagonists from eleven different Walt Disney Animation Studios films and one Pixar film who are either royal by birth, royal by marriage, or considered a “princess” due to their significant portrayal of heroism in their film.

Fandom

So, those are some of the main characteristics that fans and others have been able to figure out.

That being said, Fandom goes on to say this:

Although the specific criteria for becoming a member of the franchise is vague for the most part, most often there are “unofficial” Disney Princesses who do not join the line-up for different reasons.

Fandom

What exactly are these “different reasons”? Will we ever know for sure?

Those are tough questions for fans to answer, because Disney hasn’t yet given us a full answer on it.

Although, Disney did give us a peek behind the curtain during Ralph Breaks the Internet, when Vanellope meets all the Disney Princesses (some of them unofficial) in one room and all of our hearts immediately filled up and exploded with happiness…

Does she have magic hair? No.

Magic hands? No.

Do animals talk to her? No.

Was she poisoned? No.

Was she cursed? No.

Was she kidnapped or enslaved? No!

Did she make a promise to an underwater sea witch in exchange for a pair of human legs? No, again!

But…

Do people assume that all her problems would go away if a big, strong man showed up? YES!

According to the Disney Princesses in that room, that makes her a princess!

Even so, Vanellope is still not on the official Disney Princesses list.

So, what’s a Disney fan to do, huh?

Well we can take a look at who all is on the official Disney Princesses list…

Which is exactly what we’re going to do next! 🙂

Unofficial Disney Princesses List

You might have noticed that some of your favorite characters aren’t on the official Disney Princess list.

A few of the notable princesses that aren’t included (yet!) are the following.

  • Princess Elsa (Frozen & Frozen 2)
  • Princess Anna (Frozen & Frozen 2)
  • Princess Elena (Elena of Avalor)
  • Princess Kida Nedakh (Atlantis: The Lost Empire)
  • Princess Megara (Hercules)
  • Princess Leia (Star Wars)
  • Princess Vanellope Von Schweetz (Wreck-It Ralph & Ralph Breaks the Internet)
  • Princess Lilo (Lilo and Stitch)
  • Princess Sally (The Nightmare Before Christmas)

And I’m sure this unofficial Disney Princess list is missing some, too!

While there are a lot of Disney Princesses, many fans (and even some professors and scholars) have pointed out that the official list is missing a lot, too.

Not only are these some of fans favorite characters, but there’s still unfortunately a lack of diversity among these princesses…

A number of cultures and identities don’t have their very own Disney princess yet, including a Hispanic/Latinx Disney Princess, a LGBTQIA+ Disney Princess, and many more.

In my opinion, all people should be able to look at a Disney Princess and see themselves represented.

Hopefully, Disney will make all this happen in the near future.

No matter which Disney Princess is your personal favorite, there are tons of ways to make her style your own!
